Neurodiversity Affirming, Airway Focused Care,  Throughout the Lifespan

Parenting is a journey filled with discovery, especially when it comes to understanding and supporting a neurodivergent child. The term neurodiversity-affirming care has become increasingly significant in this space, but what does it mean, and how can it shape the way we approach therapy and parenting?

At Spot Therapy Hub, we are proud to be a neurodiversity-affirming & trauma informed practice, that uses a values-driven, evidence-based approach that embraces the diversity of neurological development and prioritises the well-being, autonomy, and dignity of neurodivergent individuals. Guided by our director, Kate Broderick, a dual-qualified occupational therapist and speech pathologis, we are deeply committed to delivering care that aligns with the needs and perspectives of the autistic and neurodivergent community.

Neurodiversity vs Neurodivergence

Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in human brains and neurological functioning.

Neurodivergence encompasses a range of developmental differences, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more. Instead of viewing these differences as deficits, the neurodiversity movement celebrates them as integral parts of human diversity.

At its core, neurodiversity-affirming care seeks to honour these differences, rejecting the idea of “fixing” or “normalising” neurodivergent individuals. Instead, it emphasises creating environments and supports that allow individuals to thrive as their authentic selves.

Simple answer = NO

We see so many places advertise themselves as neurodiversity-affirming, but what does that actually mean? Are they truly affirming in their practice? Our experience is that they often are not. Many providers have good intentions and genuinely want to support the neurodivergent community. However, they may fall short because they are not fully listening to neurodivergent voices or implementing policies and structures that align with true neurodiversity-affirming values. At Spot Therapy Hub, we go beyond intention, ensuring that our training, policies, and practices are shaped by the lived experiences and needs of the neurodivergent community.

Principles of Neurodiversity-Affirming Care

Honouring Lived Experience

Neurodiversity-affirming care respects the voices and lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals and their communities. It’s about listening to autistic adults and other neurodivergent advocates to guide practice.
Strengths-Based Approach

This care model focuses on the strengths, interests, and abilities of the individual rather than solely addressing challenges or perceived deficits.
Prioritising Autonomy

Neurodiversity-affirming care emphasises the individual’s right to make choices about their lives, including their therapy goals.
Rejecting Harmful Practices

Practices that aim to “mask” or “normalise” behaviours, such as suppressing stimming or forcing eye contact, are replaced with strategies that support self-expression and regulation.
Valuing Relationships

The therapeutic process is built on trust, collaboration, and respect between families, individuals, and therapists.
