Breathing
“Breathing is the first thing we do, and the last, and most of us don’t think about it much in between.’

Breathing is important and affects every system of our body. We take about 20 000 breaths a day. Dysfunctional breathing is when we do not use the physiologically optimal way to breathe.

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Key indicators of dysfunctional breathing:

 

  • Mouth breathing
  • Upper chest breathing
  • Slumped posture
  • Over breathing (commonly noted by audible breathing and visible breathing such as shoulder and collar bone movement)
  • Fast rate of breathing
  • Irregular breathing including yawning, sighing, sniffing and chronic coughs

Optimal breathing looks like:

 

  • Nasal breathing (even in a marathon!)
  • Regular breaths
  • Easy and Silent
  • Comfortable
  • Diaphragm breathing
  • Optimal tidal volume (the optimal amount is 500mL)
  • Optimal speed (8-12 breathes per minute)
